College football is back. The stadiums are full, rivalries are heating up and another season of unforgettable moments is underway.
But, something new is coming too.
Fan Tokens are heading to US college sports, and FOX Business has just given viewers a first glimpse at what fans can expect.
Broadcasting from the University of Maryland ahead of its home game against UCLA, FOX Business introduced its audience to the five college programs preparing to launch official Fan Tokens with Socios.com: Maryland, LSU, Michigan State, Penn State and Texas A&M.
And for their millions of fans, this is about much more than owning a digital asset.
It’s about getting closer to the teams they love.
From the stands to having your say
So what could owning your college team’s Fan Token actually mean?
Appearing on FOX Business, Chiliz Founder and CEO Alexandre Dreyfus highlighted one of the possibilities: giving fans a voice in official team decisions through blockchain-based voting.
“The biggest point of doing blockchain (for Fan Tokens) is the transparency and voting,” Dreyfus explained.
Having your say on the music played inside the stadium. Voting on a team promotion. Helping choose elements of a jersey. Or having a say on the number assigned to a new player.
And because votes take place onchain, the process provides a transparent and verifiable way for fans to make their voices heard.
But voting is only part of the picture.
Rewards, experiences and unforgettable moments
Across the global Socios.com community, Fan Tokens have opened the door to a huge range of rewards and experiences.
Fan Token holders have had opportunities to access match tickets, signed merchandise, VIP experiences, meet-and-greets, stadium experiences and exclusive competitions, as well as participating in official team polls.
Now, US college sports have the opportunity to put their own spin on that model.
What exactly that looks like will be determined alongside each university ahead of launch, but FOX Business highlighted some of the potential already being explored, including priority ticket access, exclusive rewards and fan voting.
And that’s where things get exciting.
College sports already have some of the most passionate fan communities anywhere in the world. Fan Tokens provide another way for those communities to participate.
Five huge college communities. One new way to be a fan.
The first five programs give Fan Tokens quite a stage on which to make their US college sports debut.
Penn State’s Beaver Stadium can welcome more than 106,000 fans. Texas A&M’s Kyle Field holds more than 102,000, as does LSU’s Tiger Stadium.
Then there are the millions more following from across the US and around the world.
For those fans, supporting their team has always meant more than what happens on game day. It’s the traditions, rivalries, colors, songs and shared experiences that turn a university team into a community.
Fan Tokens are designed to bring more of that relationship into the digital world.
And this is just the beginning
Maryland, LSU, Michigan State, Penn State and Texas A&M are the first five — but they won’t be the last.
Socios.com and Playfly Sports plan to expand the initiative to 30 university athletic departments, opening the door for millions more college sports fans to experience Fan Tokens.
The details of the first US college Fan Tokens, including their individual features and tokenomics, are still being developed with our partners.
What we can tell you is what we’re working towards: new ways to participate, new experiences to unlock and new opportunities to get closer to the teams you already love.
Fan Tokens have already connected millions of supporters with some of the biggest names in global sport.
Now they’re coming to college sports. US fans, get ready. This is only the beginning.
