Recap the history of Tottenham Hotspur and prepare for the Spurs FTO®

The Spurs FTO® is coming soon for the global Spurs fan community,

The passion of Spurs fans runs deep. Let’s take a look back through the North London club’s storied history, recapping their humble beginnings, finest moments and greatest players on the way to detailing what you need to do when the Spurs FTO® launches on October 04th.

Tottenham Hotspur: Early years through to the modern day

Tottenham Hotspur’s rich history began way back in 1882 when a group of cricket-playing schoolboys formed a football club to keep them busy during the winter months.

The Hotspur Club, as it was briefly known, soon evolved into Tottenham Hotspur, and it has stayed that way ever since.

The club soon adopted the “Spurs” nickname and turned professional on December 20th 1895, first competing in Division One of the Southern League. Frank Brettell was appointed  Spurs first manager just before the turn of the century before the reins were handed over to Brettell’s first signing, John Cameron. Cameron made an instant impact, guiding Tottenham Hotspur to victory in the final of the 1901 FA Cup, where they defeated Sheffield United 3-1.

The club’s Golden era, which began when Bill Nicholson took over in 1958. Nicholson became Tottenham Hotspur’s  most successful manager, overseeing a team packed with talent, including Dave Mackay, John White and the irrepressible goal-scoring prowess of Jimmy Greaves.

Nicholson’s gifted side claimed multiple major trophies and established Tottenham Hotspur as a real footballing force. Notable successes include the Double in 1961, the FA Cup in 1962 and the Cup Winners Cup in 1963.

While no other era in the history of Tottenham Hotspur has matched the halcyon days of the early Sixties, Spurs fans have enjoyed more domestic and European success over the years, while multiple stars have pulled on the shirt over the decades.

The list of outstanding footballers to play for Tottenham Hotspur is huge and far too big to list. Still, names that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of fans include the aforementioned Greaves, Ray Clemence, Glenn Hoddle, Gary Lineker, Steve Perryman, Paul Gascoigne, David Ginola, Jurgen Klinsmann and Teddy Sheringham.

The likes of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Son Heung Min have played starring roles in recent Tottenham Hotspur history. And, of course, no list mentioning great former Tottenham Hotspur players would be complete without the club’s now departed all-time top goalscorer, Harry Kane.

Home stadia, passionate fans and going global

The first Spurs game to be reported by the local press took place at Tottenham marshes in 1883, but it wasn’t until 1905 that Tottenham Hotspur found their first proper home when they purchased the freehold to what would eventually develop into White Hart Lane – its home until 2017.

The club played most of its football at Wembley between 2017 and into 2019, before officially moving into their new home – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – on April 03rd 2019.

Spurs stadium capacity stands at 62, 850 and it’s home to a passionate fanbase. Tottenham Hotspur’s fanbase drew originally from North London, but the modern appeal of the club spreads far beyond N17.

Spurs fans can now be found in every corner of the planet and they will very soon be able to engage with their club further with Spurs Fan Tokens.
