Historical Finals of UCL Final
The eyes of the world will be on the 2024 Champions League final, but will it be able to match up to some of the tournament’s previous great finals that are listed below.
2005 – Liverpool 3 – 3 AC Milan 3 (Liverpool win 3-2 on penalties)
3-0 down at half time to a star-studded AC Milan side, Liverpool fought back from the brink of defeat against all odds thanks to the brilliance of Steven Gerrard.
After levelling the game in six crazy second half minutes, Liverpool resisted multiple Milan attacks to send the game to penalties where Jerzy Dudek was the hero.
1999 – Manchester United 2 – 1 Bayern Munich
On 89 minutes, Manchester United’s treble dream was basically over as they had no answer to the brilliance of Bayern Munich who had led for most of the game thanks to a Mario Basler free kick.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham, two late substitutes for United, were both about to give up though and their late goals ensured that United completed one of the greatest ever seasons as they won three trophies.
1994 – AC Milan 4 – 0 Barcelona
AC Milan were one of football’s best sides in the early 1990s but even they were not supposed to compare with Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona that featured Romario, Pep Guardiola, Ronald Koeman and Hristo Stoichkov.
Stifled by injuries and suspension, Milan shouldn’t have been able to compete, but they turned in a defensive masterclass and constantly punished Barcelona on the counter to win Europe’s biggest prize in a one-sided manner.
Teams with More UCL Finals Played
Real Madrid have been the most dominant team in Champions League/European Cup history with 14 victories from their 17 final appearances. The Spanish side last won the competition in 2022 and haven’t lost a final since they were beaten by Liverpool in 1981.
AC Milan are next on the list with seven victories from 11 finals with their last success coming in 2007 when they beat Liverpool in 2007.
Bayern Munich have also played in 11 finals with six wins, and they last took the trophy in 2020 when defeating PSG.
Like Bayern Munich, Liverpool are also on six wins from their 10 finals and they last tasted glory in 2019 when defeating Tottenham Hotspur in an all-English final in 2019.
Despite not winning the competition, Atletico Madrid have appeared in three finals, losing all of them with two being against bitter rivals, Real Madrid
Conclusion
The 2024 final has all the ingredients to be a quality game of football and both sides, renowned for attacking football, will be looking to claim the prize and send their supporters home happy.
