The 48 qualified teams have been drawn into 12 groups of four. Each nation will play three group stage matches, and 32 teams will advance to the knockout rounds.

Qualification from the groups works as follows:

  1. The top two teams in each group qualify automatically (24 teams).
  2. The eight best third-place teams also progress (8 teams).
  3. This creates a 32-team knockout bracket that begins after the group stage.

If teams finish level on points, the tiebreakers are applied in this order:

  1. Goal difference
  2. Goals scored
  3. Head-to-head results
  4. Fair play record
  5. Drawing of lots

The expanded format means the 2026 edition will be the largest World Cup ever held, both in number of teams and total matches played.
